The School of Toronto Dance Theatre announces its new name

It is with great pleasure to share that The School of Toronto Dance Theatre’s new operating name will be Dance Arts Institute effective June 1, 2023. This exciting name change marks a new era for us, highlighting our evolution and growing organization. Our purpose holds strong – to be an exceptional training centre that helps shape the future of dance in Canada. While remaining rooted in our rich history, Dance Arts Institute aligns with our desire to build an institution that is pluralistic and responsive to the evolving needs of the dance and arts sectors.

At Dance Arts Institute, we pride ourselves on our student-centred approach to education. With every consideration, we are committed to advocating for and legitimizing Contemporary dance practices as a viable professional pursuit. Our Professional Training Program curriculum prepares students for leadership and artistic excellence in the field of dance, providing them with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience necessary to navigate the competitive and constantly evolving industry. Our impressive alumni, who have made a name for themselves both nationally and internationally, will continue to find a home at Dance Arts Institute as we grow and innovate.

The faculty and guest artists of Dance Arts Institute bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to our students. The new Artistic Research Residencies provide an opportunity for the dance community to share their research and, alongside our Communities Programs, offer multiple entry points which enrich our collective understanding of Contemporary dance practices.

We look forward to welcoming you to Dance Arts Institute, where we believe in equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed as emerging artists in today’s world. Thank you for being a part of our community, and we can’t wait to dance with you!

Dance Arts Institute

A New Name for a New Era

The process of becoming Dance Arts Institute began in 2021, after the appointment of new Artistic & Pedagogical Director Sasha Ivanochko, and involved extensive research and collaboration with our faculty, staff, and community. The careful rebranding process honours our distinct artistic and educational identity that allows us the freedom to shape our future in step with the ongoing developments of the field of dance.
