Elizabeth Auclair performed as Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company (MGDC) for over 16 years (1993-2009). She danced many of Graham’s seminal roles on extensive international and domestic tours, and was also featured in original works by Martha Clarke, Larry Keigwin, Susan Strohman, and Robert Wilson. In addition, she danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Asian American Dance Alliance, City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong), Dankmeyer Dance, Jean Erdman Dance Company, Keith Lee and Dancers, Labyrinth Dance Theater, Pascal Rioult Dance Theater, Pearl Lang Dance Theater, and Sandra Kaufmann Dance, and she appears in the films Rhythm of Destiny (1991, Hong Kong), and The Dark Angel (Sasha Spielvogel, 2001, New York).
In 2002 Auclair was named Director for Expression of Emotion Through the Art of Dance, an arts-in-education outreach project, created in response to the events of September 11, 2001 in New York City, and designed to give children in highly affected areas access to the expressive possibilities contained within the unique movement language of Martha Graham.
Auclair has served as Rehearsal Director for the MGDC, Pearl Lang Dance Theater, and 360 Dance, as well as Associate Director for Graham II (junior company). She spent two seasons touring Italy, as Rehearsal Director, with Cercando Picasso, a collaborative stage production presented by the Rosetti Theater group, featuring the renowned Italian actor, Giorgio Albertazzi, and MGDC dancers. Auclair was a founding member of 13 Carat Productions (NY), acting as Assistant Director and dancer for stage and film productions.
Auclair was engaged as Guest Professor of Dance at Kobe College in Japan for a three-year term (2015-2018), and has also served as adjunct faculty at Hofstra University, the Laguardia High School of Performing Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, and SUNY Purchase (all in NY), and the University of the Arts (Philadelphia).
She has taught Graham technique, repertory, and master classes at numerous academies and universities, including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, the Boston Conservatory, CAP 21 Conservatory, Dance St. Louis, Frostburg State University (Maryland), Herbert H. Lehman College (NY), the Joffrey New School, Long Island University (Brooklyn), Motion 41 Dance (Omaha, Nebraska), the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, The Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival (University of Wyoming, Laramie), Taiwan National University of the Arts, University of North Carolina (Greensboro and Charlotte campuses), and the Youth Contemporary Ballet of Saskatchewan. She remains on faculty at the Martha Graham School, and is a happily returning guest to The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (since 2004).
She enjoys acting as regisseur in staging the ballets of Martha Graham, and has done so for BalletNova in Virginia (Steps in the Street), the Boston Conservatory (Appalachian Spring), the Dutch National Ballet (Errand Into the Maze), Hofstra University, NY (Steps in the Street), the Julliard School [Assistant to the Director] (Dark Meadow), Kobe College (Primitive Mysteries), Montclair State University, NJ (Night Journey Chorus), Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro (Maple Leaf Rag), University of the Arts (Helios/Acts of Light), and University of North Carolina-Charlotte (Primitive Mysteries) and -Greensboro (Steps in the Street), among other groups.
Auclair received her dance training through scholarships at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, where she also completed the teacher training program. She has additionally studied Butoh with Maureen Fleming, and Flamenco with Marianno Parra. She is a 2007 graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York City, earning certification as a Holistic Health Counselor, and is also an avid yogi.
