Job Opportunity: Dance History Teacher

The School of Toronto Dance Theatre is one of Canada’s leading dance training centres and offers training programs for professional and recreational dancers of all ages from its studio and office space in Toronto’s Cabbagetown area. The School strives for artistic excellence in teaching, stays vitally aware of ongoing developments in the art form of dance, provides stable administration and financial management, and maintains a strong and responsible Board of Directors. Through its dedication to excellence, the School has remained at the forefront of training in Contemporary dance in Canada for over fifty years.


About the position

The School is in search of a teacher to collaborate on the redevelopment of our Dance History course, and to deliver it in our 2022 Winter Term. We are looking for a candidate who teaches from an anti racist educative position, and possesses a thorough understanding and knowledge of 20th century Modern and Contemporary Dance*. The course is intended to provide students with context for their training and the milieu today, and to consider the development of the form alongside economic, social, cultural, political and art-historical factors. The course is currently being delivered virtually and we are accepting applications from across Canada.

*Historically, the course focus has been predominantly centred on the evolution of Western Concert Dance lineages, with guest speakers contributing multi-perspectival knowledge.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree (MFA or PhD) or EQUIVALENT in a field or discipline of
    demonstrated relevance and an established artistic practice in dance
  • 3+ years teaching at the post secondary/undergraduate level
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and passionate about dance and literacy
  • Works independently while collaborating effectively with the other faculty

Reporting to the Artistic Director, the successful candidate must:

  • be able to work virtually from a home or a distance office
  • provide their own equipment for virtual delivery


Particulars of the position:

It is a 35-hour contract position with the strong possibility to renew. Compensation for the redevelopment of the course may be contracted, if required. Class times may vary.

Hourly: $45-55 per hour. Class preparation and student evaluations are included in this hourly
rate. Faculty meetings are contracted at $25 per hour.
Course Length: 35 hours
Instructional Hours: 35 hours
Winter Term: January 3, 2022 – May 7, 2022
